Poachers have once again surfaced as the evil doers in Assam when they shot and cut the horn of a Rhino while it was still alive in Kaziranga National Park. The Great One Horned Rhinoceros was found in an appalling condition by the forest department who are trying to save the dying animal.

Kaziranga wildlife is battling floods once again after heavy rains flooded the state of Assam. The national park is one of the biggest homes of rare one horned rhinos with about 2500 of these rhinos found in Assam.

But even as locals, NGOs and the forest department struggle to evacuate animals to safer grounds, poachers are using the natural calamity to their advantage.

The rhino that was butchered by the poachers had fled from the flooded park and therefore was out of the range of the forest department. Even as it struggled to save itself from the flooded forest, the animal was targeted by human enemies waiting for an opportune moment to grab the helpless animal’s horn.

Environmentalist Somyadeep Dutta said, ‘It is a sad day for Assam. I am appalled at the fact that poachers could get away with the horn of a live rhino.’

According to Suresh Chand, Assam’s chief wildlife warden most of the Kaziranga National park has flooded in the past few days drowning many animals including two rhinos. Many animals have been constantly moving to higher grounds taking a busy highway route.

Chand says that the Rhino too was trying to move to higher grounds when the poachers saw and shot it. They then sawed the rhino’s horn while it was still alive. Veterinarians were rushed to the rhino’s side and are still trying to save its life.

A total of 13 have been killed by poachers around the park in the past nine months, a trend that has caused worry among environmental groups.

The gruesome act shows that poaching is a big threat to the existence of Rhinos in Assam. Rhino horns are falsely thought to possess medicinal properties and as long as people continue to buy them rhinos will be continued to be butchered in the same way.

Poachers should be justly punished for their horrifying act, but at the same time it is every person’s moral duty, not to encourage these men to kill more, by not buying the horns. Rhino horns are made of exactly the same material called keratin that creates our nails and hair. How would you feel if someone uprooted your nails and hair to make medicine?
