Tiger count Up in India, reveals Tiger Census

It is finally some good news for India as the latest tiger census reveals the country’s tiger population has increased considerably. From 1411 to 1706 according to the latest census, there has been more than 20 percent rise in population of the tigers in the last three years.

The minister of environment and forests, Jairam Ramesh, today unveiled the census results and announced that the results also included more areas including the Sundarbans this time.

If the Sundarbans are excluded the rise in population is still 12 percent.

The results show,

  • Population estimate of tigers at 1706, up by 295
  • Tiger estimate in Shivalik-Gangetic plains: 353, up by 56
  • Tiger population estimate in Central and Eastern Ghats: 601
  • Tiger population estimate in Western Ghats: 534, up by 132
  • Estimate in Brahmaputra flood plains, North-east hills: 148, up by 48
  • Tiger population estimate in Sunderbans: 70

This second all-India tiger estimation study was carried out in the designated 39 tiger reserves across India.
