Infographic: What We are Doing to Sharks

A few years back, researchers found that a 100 million sharks are killed every year by humans. This is largely because of a practice called shark finning, where sharks are captured, their fin chopped off and then the lame animals are thrown back into the water. The injury is so severe that the sharks either die of the wound or are eaten by other animals.

The irony is, while sharks are still one of the most feared animals on earth, it is actually the sharks that need to fear humans. In 2013 there were 12 cases of shark attacks on humans where as the same number of sharks were killed by humans every 4 seconds!

To help understand the implication of such a statistic, in 2013, Joe Chernov and Robin Richards of Ripetungi created this infographic. Look and be prepared to be astounded!
