The tiny pores under the surface of the leaves called stomata are primarily responsible for the intake of carbon dioxide that plants need for photosynthesis. During the daytime, the pores are open to allow the maximum intake of the gas in the presence of sunlight so that plants can produce their food. But what happens […]

Deforestation Cutting Escape Route of Animals Fighting Climate Change
Imagine it is unbearably hot where you live. The rain clouds are nowhere in sight and you wish you could escape to a cooler climate, somewhere on the hills. In fact, you set out the very next day, only to find that the road that would take you to the hills is gone. In its […]
11 Himalayan Animals & Plants Fighting Climate Change
A few days ago, scientists from the University of Columbia and the University of Utah shared images and a study to show that the melting of Himalayan glaciers caused by rising temperatures has accelerated dramatically since the start of the 21st century. The analysis, spanning 40 years of satellite observations across India, China, Nepal and […]
The Last Time We Experienced This Much Carbon dioxide Was Never
On Saturday (May 11), the levels of carbon dioxide in our planet reached 415 parts per million (ppm), as measured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. That is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than anytime in human history. And in the last 800,000 years. As climate expert Peter Gleick aptly […]
In A Hotter Future, The Thickness Of The Tree Bark Would Decide Its Survival
It is said, adversities make you tougher, and it seems the phrase is true for trees as well. Scientists from the Princeton University have found out that trees that grow in forests which are prone to fires, have a thicker bark. In a future, where global warming could lead to warmer climates, the study of […]
How Mumbai Mangroves Save the City everyday
The Bombay High Court made a monumental decision in 2005 that led to the strict protection of the mangrove forests lining the city coasts. The decision came after the tragic Tsunami that struck the eastern Indian coasts and when it was found that the areas which had mangrove forests were saved from the disastrous high waves. These areas also recovered faster after the aftermath. Worldwide mangroves are fast depleting but because of the conservation order, Mumbai and its neighboring areas now boast of more than 5,800 hectares of mangrove land which is protected and will protect the city in future.
Climate Change Affecting Bird Migration Pattern In India
20 years ago, Chilika lake of Odisha was much cooler than at present. This helped birds migrating from the Arctic, gradually adjust to the warmer climate as they flew from sub zero temperatures to moderately cold regions of the world to spend their winters. Today, things are not the same. Climate change has unfortunately robbed […]
Melting Glaciers Is Increasing Length Of Days
Scientists studying the past changes in sea level have found out that the rise in sea levels due to melting glaciers around the poles is affecting the rotation of the earth on its axis. As the Earth slows down, the length of the days are increasing. “In order to understand the sea-level change that has […]
World’s Glaciers Melting at Fastest Rate Ever
A recent study on glaciers has indicated a serious imbalance in many regions of the world due to the severe ice loss of the past two decades. The research adds that stability in climatic conditions would not prevent further ice loss from glaciers. “The observed glaciers currently lose between half a metre and one metre […]
Restoration of Coral Reefs Best Way to Save Millions of Human Lives
Coral reefs form one of the most delicate and valuable ecosystems along the coastlines of the world. Even though they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, they provide habitat for close to 2 million species. Known as ‘the rainforests of the ocean’, owing to their rich and diverse biodiversity, now a recent study […]
